Kia ora and welcome! Kowhatu Taonga is Aotearoa's most distinctive and impactful family-run carving business. Established by myself, Mijean Wetere, in collaboration with my father, Trevor Wetere, we specialize in crafting exquisite traditional and contemporary Māori Taonga from a diverse range of stunning, upcycled natural stones. Each Taonga (treasure) is meticulously hand-carved, embodying the essence of our cultural heritage and artistic expertise. In Māori culture, Taonga are highly significant spiritual items, each possessing it's own meaning and purpose.

Our uniqueness stems from Kowhatu Memorial Charity, New Zealand's pioneering Headstone Charity, founded by my father. We assist families burdened by the high costs of conventional headstone services through our innovative resource recovery program. This program involves recycling discarded and rejected natural stones from the construction industry. Notably, our Taonga carvings originated as a means to support our charitable endeavors and remains a core aspect of our company to this day.
